HDA Case Study 1
A manager who had moved employers several times with the resultant effect on his pension.
Having married late with 2 children at university and the third hoping to go in three years, there was a need to build capital and maintain income. It was hoped if a business could be started it would have some value if sold at a later date as a going concern.
HDA worked with the employee and the partner to identify the skills and experience, which could transfer to a business. After searching the local area for an existing business for sale and examining their markets, it was decided to start a business rather than buy a going concern.
A need for reliable garden services was identified to address the corporate market. This would sell to building companies, private hospitals and nursing homes, hotels, leisure locations etc. Organisations with multiple locations would be the prime target. The business started in Cardiff and has since expanded to two other cities.
HDA Case Study 2
A senior director with long service who had travelled widely outside the UK.
Having worked long hours away from home there had been no time or opportunity to build up interests or friends outside work. Financially well provided for, money was not an issue. The children had left home long ago and his wife was used to organising her life without him there for much of the time.
HDA helped to structure the time now available into compartments and helped to organise the week with plenty of opportunity to explore new areas. There was a dominant need to build something and keep contributing, work had provided the status. This would need to be replaced. With an enquiring mind there was an opportunity to learn a new skill. Also health matters needed attention.
When he left HDA he was advising a circus school on their management, had two non exec appointments and was on a welding course to develop his interest in classic cars. A year later he started an Open University degree in geology.
HDA Case Study 3
This employer offered HDA's retirement support as part of the pension provision and information about the services came on the last day at work. The employee had not thought to take up the HDA services as he had no need to earn money and thought that things would just develop.
Six months following the retirement the employer contacted HDA to ask if we could help as the employee was now suffering from depression and had largely withdrawn to the house, getting up at midday and watching a lot of TV to the despair of the partner.
HDA met both the employee and the partner separately and then together. Treatment for the depression was organised and partly funded by HDA. At the same time work started on identifying the lifestyle wanted.
There was no need for income or capital growth, but the financial affairs needed sorting. HDA provided tax and financial advice.
Physical activity became important, a new sport was identified as offering potential to engage the mind and body and provided an unthreatening place to met new people.
As a consequence the organisation changed how it introduced HDA. A retirement workshop or a one to one planning session took place three months prior to actual retirement. The HDA programme started at that point. HDA was required to contact each employee approaching retirement and discuss support needed within the boundaries of the programme provided
