HDA Employer Reputation Event at the CIPD Central London Branch: Ensuring Employer Reputation - from Recession to Recovery
The commercial picture in September 2010 is stark, including :
- instability & failure across world’s largest, most formidable organisations;
- black holes in pension fund balance sheets, (around £100 billion in recent counts);
- poor corporate judgement & perceptions of poor controls, (eg. RBS's turn of fortune during the recession, and the banking industry as a whole);
- leadership dishonesty and perceptions of unfettered greed, (eg. Enron, Arthur Andersen’s error of judgement, and the Bernie Madoff case);
- impact of cost cutting on safety and the environment, (eg. Toyota's safety recall issues, and BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill tragedy);
- high volume redundancies at all levels, (across the private sector, and anticipation of major trauma in the public sector post the October 20th Comprehensive Spending Review 2010 report);
- the personal impact of recession;
- attitude change to work and the corporation, (including Generation-Y thinking - don't live for work ... work to live - and the impact of social networking).
On 21 September HDA’s CEO, Clayton Glen, presented to a CIPD Central London Branch member audience in London; (full presentation downloadable here ) focusing on key themes:
- understanding your reputation stakeholders, including current staff, ex staff and future talent;
- understanding the differences between chronic (eg. tobacco sector) vs acute (eg. BP) reputation management needs;
- appreciating the reputation value of ‘authentic’ organisations (eg. Innocent and Google);
- using Google as benchmark and case study of how a good reputation may change over time – particularly the potential implications of Google’s "Don't be evil" mantra in the future;
- identifying what HR, L&D and Talent Management professionals can do to positively impact employer reputation;
- the importance of transparency, facts & data for building HR / L&D / Talent Management business cases.
The event briefly covered the importance of reputation ‘connectedness’ for HR; particularly managing the following in combination:
- corporate ethics;
- diversity management;
- corporate social responsibility (CSR);
- green practices;
- staff empowerment, including career self ownership via career reviews and internal career development centres;
- staff engagement;
- staff wellness, resiliency & health;
- employer value propositions (EVPs) and employer branding;
- managing Generation Y expectations.
