HDA Generation F (Facebook Generation) Survey - First 150 Employers & First 600 Student Response Results
HDA has delivered staff engagement services for a number of years, and we have become very interested in the impact of social networking on the engagement of the next generation workforce. The most valuable and talented people are likely to already be using a range of social networking technologies, including Facebook, Twitter, Xing, Plaxo, LinkedIn, YouTube, Vimeo, the new Google+ which is currently under testing, etc ), via computer and/or smartphone.
Thefuture workforce; currently at school, at college or university, certainly will be !
In September we soft-launched our Generation F (Facebook Generation) Surveys to employers (mainly virally via LinkedIn, and with assistance from law firm, Cripps, Harries, Hall, and from the Executive Grapevine). This survey was supported by a parallel survey to secondary schools in Kent during September, and have been able to report on our initial headline findings at a series of public speaking events during October, at:
1. Bath Spa University (Bath) - 19 October 2011 (Focus - Engaging the Next Generation Workforce)
2. Community Housing Cymru HR Conference (Cardiff) - 20 October 2011 (Focus - Engaging the Next Generation Workforce). More here.
3. Pilat "HR Exceeding Expectations - Being Strategic" Executive Roundtable Forum (London) - 20 October 2011 (Focus - Developing HR Careers, including introducing delegates to Pilat's new Online Career Transition Planner, driven by HDA) More here.
Our initial findings following 150 employer responses are :
- 50% of employers say that an employee’s social networking profile has created concern at work;
- 68% of employers sometimes or always check candidate social networking profiles during the recruitment process;
- 61% of employers have a social networking policy, however, an identical number of employers (61%) do not know whether social networking helps or hinders productivity;
- 44% of employers encourage social networking for business.

Thanks to our initial distribution partners on this project: Cripps, Harries, Hall, and Executive Grapevine, and to David Wallace at Hillview School, whose efforts generated well over 600 responses from 4 schools in Kent in around 3 weeks, including responses from: Hillview, Judd, Weald of Kent and Tonbridge.
