Lead the field by playing to your strengths
Jacqui Hartas, HDA Coach
Few people nowadays go to work simply to earn a living. We want work that is also worthwhile and fulfilling, to be energised and motivated by our work. Using our strengths effectively at work and having them recognised are what makes us feel valued and valuable. The relatively new movement of Positive Psychology recognises this and offers insightful and constructive models and tools for coaches who embrace the strengths-focused approach.
When we play to our strengths, we use our natural skills and talents that derive from our core values and drivers. This energises us to perform at our best and with confidence – to lead the field and to inspire others.
Imagine the organisation where everyone plays to their strengths.
Identifying, using and building on strengths to overcome challenges and achieve objectives are the key elements of strengths-focused coaching and are conducive to increasing self-confidence and motivation.
To identify core strengths, coaches look out for:
- Evidence of flow – becoming totally absorbed by an activity that uses strengths?
- Signs of enthusiasm e.g. bright eyes, raised voice pitch and speed, gesturing.
- Descriptions that use visualisation.
- Passion and energy.
- Childhood examples.
- Quickness and keenness to learn and develop in areas of strength
At HDA we use a UK assessment tool ©Strengthscope to assist in identification of strengths and to enable multi-rater feedback from colleagues and / or customers. ©Strengthscope identifies the respondent’s ‘significant 7’ strengths from a source of 22 and assesses how these are currently applied and how visible they are in the current role. A powerful and positive discussion of which strengths are the key energisers, how their use can be increased and their impact maximised, is facilitated.
Strengths-focused coaching can help your organisation with:
- Leadership development
- Identification and development of talent / succession planning
- Transition and change
- Performance and retention
- Team development
