HDA speaks at East of England Local Government Association / BT 'Career Changer' Conference

HDA was delighted to co-present at the East of England LGA / BT Career Changer Conference in April, attended amongst others by senior decision makers, including:

• professional HR advisors within the public sector;
• elected Members or Officers with an interest in how the private sector might offer work to public sector workers, to assist their policy decisions

Amongst other areas of focus, the material covered by HDA included the following acid test questions for public sector employees to ask themselves when considering their potential career options outside of the public sector:

• Am I scared about a volatile future and do I prefer the stability I know, or do I see change as an opportunity to develop myself and take my career forward?
• Do I actively embrace change now (eg. taking any voluntary redundancy offered), or play wait-and-see?
• Do I prefer the stability of what I know or do I embrace embarking on a steep learning curve?
• What is the optimal direction for my career based on my strengths, weaknesses, interests, objectives and commitments to my family?
• What do I have to offer elsewhere in the public sector, or in an alternative sector; whether private or charitable – do I have transferrable skills?
• Do I prefer being an employee or do I anticipate benefits from being my own boss i.e. is self employment right for me?
• As a public servant, with a strong commitment to service, how do I also present my business acumen and ability to work towards commercial objectives such as turnover growth, profit maximisation, brand development?

According to HDA's CEO, Clayton Glen, 'The audience was well acquainted with the key issues, and asked great questions, and I look forward speaking at similar events aimed at addressing the Coalition Government's focus on encouraging private sector job creation to offset anticipated job losses in the public sector.'
