Senior Individual Outplacement Programme – Green-Energy
Background
HDA was engaged to provide career transition support to a former CIO of a sustainable energy company based in Scandinavia. 
She was a seasoned business executive with a strong track record seeking a new opportunity with a multinational company. Although a Scandinavian national and living in a Nordic country; with regards to her job search she was internationally mobile and wanted to target the U.K., the U.S. and the Middle East. As Scandinavia was her base; following an initial face-to-face needs analysis session in London, HDA conducted the remainder of the support programme via Skype meetings, which were held regularly over a period of 3 months.
The client’s objectives were to:
- Understand the job market in the U.K. and U.S.
- Understand how to work effectively with recruiters.
- How to position herself within the market and how to market herself.
- Explore her options in the energy industry.
- Explore options in IT environments and/or consulting.
- Explore working in start-up environments.
- Develop a CV that would work in the U.K. (her current one was very Nordic).
- Understand the interview process and polish her interview skills.
- Have a coach to motivate and support her throughout his campaign.
Programme summary
The programme consisted of: provision of career coaching via Skype and e-mail, with regular 1 to 1.5 hour meetings focused around:
- approaches to the job market such as marketing to the U.K. headhunting community,
- networking effectively,
- presenting herself confidently,
- confidence building with regard to her skills,
- how to target employers and consideration of options available,
- assessment of strengths and weakness as well as goals,
- personal branding,
- negotiating and evaluating offers.
Outcome of programme
When the coach first ‘met’ the client virtually via Skype, the client was de-motivated by her job search campaign to date. She had not been getting anywhere with positions outside of her home country and positions in her home country were limited.
She had approached UK-based head hunters on her own with her Nordic-style CV and Nordic-style interview techniques which did not come across as dynamic and professional to a U.K headhunter environment.
She had had a bad experience with one recruiter in particular and this had really knocked her confidence, and she had begun to think she was not marketable.
We began by building a CV that truly reflected her capabilities and achievements, explored how to work more effectively with recruiters, started to come up with target companies and then practiced mock interviews several times so that she really felt comfortable.
This was all completed via Skype. In between times, the client would e-mail any concerns or issues.
The client needed milestones so her HDA consultant set up weekly steps to achieve those milestones.
Within four weeks, she had generated interest with several top Recruiters in the U.K. as well as securing interviews with world class companies in Germany, Denmark and Scotland.
As she was able to clearly and more concisely articulate her strengths and uniqueness she saw that she had a lot to offer to the consulting world. Through careful positioning and articulation of her strengths, she managed to have an informational interview with a major global system solutions provider in their advisory services department.
She had a series of further interviews at this major global system solutions provider, whilst participating in a round of interviews with a Scottish utility company, and was offered a dream role with the global system solutions provider.
Conclusions
According to the HDA senior consultant, Nella McNabb, who managed the programme; ‘Most importantly, following a slow start; within 3 months of receiving HDA’s support, the client had kick started her campaign, regained her confidence and is now equipped with the skills necessary to move forward.’
