Support for those dismissed on the grounds of ill health?
Surely this is one of the worst jobs HR professionals have to do. At some time we have all had to do this and the necessity to dismiss on these grounds is becoming more frequent as other options are disappearing fast. Some time ago we could use redundancy or early retirement schemes to ease out employees who could no longer do the job to their past standard due to ill health. The option of leaving on the grounds of ill health and receiving an ill health pension are available to only a few who clearly will never work again.
The majority could work again in another type of role but not in their current role. Organisations carrying no slack have few internal redeployment opportunities at any one time.
The future could be bright, a lot brighter than facing a very uncertain future with no help in securing another income stream.
The versatile outplacement support provided by HDA can help individuals examine what they can do, as opposed to what they cannot do, and plan how that can be turned into an income. In some cases there will be retraining, in others, it is a question of how they can now work with physical or psychological limitations, which may involve difficulty with travelling.
With dedicated career consultants located round the UK HDA can visit the individual at work before they leave and begin to examine the options and plan the way forward. Individuals can have their HDA support carefully tailored to their changing needs. We may work with partners who will now take a new or expanded role in supporting the family unit.
There will be a lead HDA career consultant who is responsible for bringing in other necessary HDA support when required. They will draw off a pool of talented and experienced career consultants who may also be psychologists, counsellors, coaches, and be experienced in helping to identify self-employment opportunities. Re-training needs and opportunities are identified and assessed for their contribution to future employment.
Perhaps the most supporting feature of the work in this area is the constant presence of the online consultants, available by telephone and email to answer queries and give support when needed. With the HDA career Website available 24/7 there is a source of easily accessed information to help define the new opportunities.
As employers we need to think of supporting those who must leave due to ill health. Given the right career support these individuals can move onto the next part of their lives with optimism and the employer will keep their reputation.
